When I bought my savage, the previous owner went to show me how good it ran. She cranked it over and over and over until the battery was toast. After checking the plug, which wasn't in very bad shape, and charging up the battery, we tried again, same thing. I finally noticed a disconnected hose - the vacuum hose on the carb, and re-connected it. Now it fired right up - no problems since. Go ahead and change the plug, its a good idea anyway, but check the hoses around/on the carb - thats my two-cents worth, good luck!
